Just A few of Our Selections
Projects #1 & 2
|
SummerStudents read The Bean Trees by Barbara Kingsolver and one nonfiction text from a list as part of their summer assignment. For each novel, students complete 3 responses that represent the beginning, middle and end of the book in which they practice making & supporting claims with evidence and analysis and then tying the topics to a message or theme the author is trying to convey.

Project #3 |
September - October |
|
Students choose any book at an appropriate reading level that interests them. The project for this book will mirror the summer assignment so that based on feedback from previous work, students can develop skills related to making and supporting claims about ambiguous areas of the text.

Project #4 |
November - December:: Literature Circles |
Based on their interests and reading level, students are assigned to a Literature Circle, a group of 3-4 students who read the same book together. Groups establish a reading schedule and then, each week, meet to discuss open-ended text based questions they have prepared in advance and reflect on major themes.
