PSAT, SAT & ACT Prep
Throughout the year, all work that students do in Honors English 2 will build toward success in high-stakes standardized tests including those required for college admission like the SAT and ACT.
PSAT Test PrepWhen Do I Take the PSAT? |
WHY TAKE THE PSAT?The PSAT is designed to PREPARE you for both the SAT and ACT. Not only does it familiarize you with the content, structure and process of the test, but you will receive information about what you will need to study to prepare for the real thing. Students in 11th grade also have the ability to earn scholarships (like National Merit Scholarships) based on their performance.
|
All 10th and 11th grade students may take the PSAT here on campus here at Harbor once a year during the regular school day in October. The PSAT date is set by the College Board. There is no need to sign-up and the exam is free for you when you take it through our school.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE SAT AND ACT?
Most 4-year colleges require that you submit SAT or ACT scores as part of the application process, but allow YOU to CHOOSE the test that is best for you. Each has distinct differences so do a little research ahead of time to find out which test you should take. Most students choose to take these tests TWICE - the first time in the spring of their eleventh grade year and a second time in the fall of senior year.
The SAT Essay & ACT ESSAY
When you sign-up for the standard SAT or ACT exam, you will be asked if you want to ADD the writing portion. For some colleges this is optional or recommended and others required. You may NOT sign-up just to take the writing portion though so if you decide later you want to take the essay (or the school you are applying for requires it), you will have to RETAKE the ENTIRE test. The SAT and ACT essays are distinctly different in what you will write about.

SAT SUBJECT TESTS (also called the SAT 2)Some colleges require the SAT Subject Tests - also called the SAT 2's - in addition to the SAT or ACT. These schools will often ask that you pick two subjects that best show your academic expertise. This is particularly true if you’re applying to certain programs within a school like an engineering or pre-med program. |
DO CSU & UC CAMPUSES REQUIRE
THE SAT SUBJECT TESTS?
SAT Subject Tests are not required for CSU or UC campuses, however, some UC campuses recommend that students vying for slots in competitive majors especially in math and science take the tests to demonstrate subject proficiency. Check out UC admission policies for further details.
